The short version

A sagging metal gate that won't latch is almost never the gate panel itself. It's the hinge, the post, or the frame. By the time the latch stops catching, the free corner of the gate has dropped, and one of three things caused it. Here is the short version:

  • Read the latch gap first. Close the gate and look at the gap on the latch side. If it is wide at the top and tight at the bottom, the free corner is dropping. That confirms a sag, and it points you at the hinge side.
  • Then plumb the hinge post. Lean a level on the hinge-side post. If it tilts toward the opening, your problem is the footing, not the gate. If it is plumb, the failure is at the hinge or in the frame.
  • In DuPage County, a leaning post is usually frost heave. Saturated ground freezes, lifts a shallow footing, and does not fully settle back. Over a few winters the post walks out of plumb and the gate drops with it.
  • DIY stops at steel and at the post. A cable anti-sag kit on a light, sound gate is fair game. A cracked weld, a steel gate where screws keep pulling out, or a heaved post is a weld-and-footing job, not a hardware-store bracket.

Here is the thing almost every "how to fix a sagging gate" answer online gets wrong: they treat the gate panel like the problem. But a welded steel or iron gate is a rigid frame. It does not go soft in the middle. When the latch stops catching, the free corner has dropped, and that drop is coming from one of three places: a worn or cracked hinge, a post that has leaned, or a frame that has racked out of square. Fix the wrong one and the gate is dragging again by next season. This is how a welder actually reads a sagging metal gate, and what the correct repair is for each cause.

Start here: read the latch gap, then plumb the post

Before you call anyone, you can locate the failure yourself in a couple of minutes. Work through these in order. Each answer sends you to the next step.

  1. Close the gate and read the latch-side gap. Look at the vertical gap between the gate's latch edge and the strike post. A healthy gap is even top to bottom. A gap that is wide at the top and pinched at the bottom means the free (latch) corner is dropping. That is a sag, and a sag always starts on the hinge side.
  2. Plumb the hinge post. Hold a level against the hinge-side post. If the post leans toward the opening, the whole gate is dropping because the footing moved. Stop here: this is a post and footing problem (usually frost heave), covered below. If the post is plumb, keep going.
  3. Check the gate frame for square. With the post plumb, measure the gate's two diagonals, corner to corner. Equal diagonals mean the frame is still square, so the drop is in the hinge itself. Unequal diagonals mean the frame has racked into a parallelogram, which means the diagonal brace or a corner weld has failed.
  4. If the gate hangs level but still won't latch, the gate is not the problem. Either the latch or strike is out of alignment, or the latch post itself has shifted. You will see an even gap and a latch that misses its keeper by a consistent amount.

Two more quick checks while you are out there: grab the gate at the free corner and lift. Play or clunk that disappears when you lift points at a worn hinge pin or an elongated hinge hole. And look hard at the weld where each hinge meets the frame and the post for a hairline crack or a rust seam. Those two spots settle most diagnoses.

The 4 reasons a metal gate sags and stops latching

Nearly every won't-latch gate traces back to one of these four. Here is what each one looks like so you can match yours.

  • 1. A worn or cracked hinge. The pin has worn, the hinge hole has elongated, or the weld holding the hinge to the frame or post has cracked. Every swing loads that joint, and heavy gates chew through undersized hinges. Look for: free-corner play that vanishes when you lift the gate, a clunk at the top hinge, a dark line or rust seam at a hinge weld.
  • 2. A leaning hinge post. The post the gate hangs on has tilted toward the opening because its footing moved. The gate is fine; it is just hanging off a post that is no longer vertical. Look for: a hinge post that fails the level test, a gate that got worse over one or two winters, cracked or heaved slab next to the post.
  • 3. A racked (out-of-square) frame. The gate has slumped into a parallelogram because its diagonal brace, or a welded corner, gave up. Long, tall, or wide gates rack first. Look for: unequal diagonals, a visibly leaning top rail while the post stays plumb, a missing or bent-out diagonal member.
  • 4. Latch or strike misalignment. The gate hangs level and swings true, but the latch no longer lines up with its keeper. Either the hardware worked loose, or the strike post shifted. Look for: an even latch gap, a latch that misses by the same amount every time, loose latch or strike fasteners.

Most real-world gates that have been ignored for a while have two of these at once, because a leaning post and a tired hinge often share the same winter. The next section is why.

The three places a metal gate stops latching: the hinge, the post, and the frame

The DuPage reason yours leaned: frost heave

If you are in DuPage County and your hinge post has walked out of plumb, the ground did it, not the gate. Northern Illinois freezes deep, and a gate post is one of the first things to feel it.

Here is the failure pattern we see over and over from Villa Park out to Wheaton and Naperville:

  1. Water saturates the soil around the footing. Fall rain, snowmelt, and downspout runoff soak the ground the post is set in.
  2. The ground freezes and lifts. When saturated soil freezes, it expands and pushes up on anything embedded in it. A footing set shallower than the local frost line, roughly 42 inches in northern Illinois, gets jacked upward every hard freeze.
  3. It does not settle all the way back. As the ground thaws it releases, but the post rarely drops back to exactly where it started. A little soil slumps into the gap, and the post ends up a hair proud and a hair tilted.
  4. Repeat for a few winters. Freeze, lift, partial settle, freeze again. Over two to four Chicagoland winters that ratchet walks the post out of plumb, and the gate sags and stops latching along with it.

This is why a gate post on the wet, shaded side of a driveway leans years before one on high, well-drained ground. It is also why simply tightening the hinges does not last here: if the post is leaning from a heaved footing, the gate keeps dropping no matter what you do at the hinge. The footing is the fix. Fix it right, by cause (what the correct repair actually is)

The right repair depends entirely on which of the four you have. Here is the honest matchup, with what the work involves.

A note on hinges and weight. Whatever the fix, the hinge has to carry the real weight of the gate, not just hold it up on a calm day. Hinge and pin size should be matched to the gate's weight, width, and how often it swings, and a heavy driveway or estate gate typically wants two or more heavy-duty weld-on hinges rather than a single pair of light ones. Weld-on barrel hinges carry the load through the weld and the pin, not through a few fasteners in wallowed-out holes, which is why they outlast bolt-on hardware on steel gates.

The anti-sag brace: get the diagonal direction right

If your gate frame has racked, a diagonal brace is what stops it, and the single most common DIY mistake is running the brace the wrong direction. There are two kinds of brace, and they go in opposite diagonals.

  • A rigid brace works in compression. A solid diagonal member (steel angle or tube on a metal gate, a wood board on a wood gate) has to run from the bottom of the hinge side up to the top of the latch side. In that direction it pushes the sagging free corner back up. Run a rigid brace the other way and it does nothing, because you cannot hold a corner up by pulling on a stiff bar in compression from the wrong end.
  • A cable or wire kit works in tension. An anti-sag cable with a turnbuckle runs the opposite diagonal: from the top of the hinge side down to the bottom of the latch side. You tighten the turnbuckle and it pulls the free corner up. Put a tension cable in the compression diagonal and it just goes slack.

Aim the diagonal as close to 45 degrees as the frame allows. A diagonal near 45 degrees splits the load efficiently between holding the corner up and holding the frame square. On a metal gate the durable version of this is a welded steel diagonal in the compression direction, or welded corner gussets, so the frame cannot rack again. A cable kit is the light-duty, homeowner-installable version and is fine on a sound, lighter gate. It is not a substitute for a weld on a heavy steel gate that has already failed once.

Weld-on hinges: when screws just won't hold

There is a point where re-tightening or replacing a bolt-on hinge stops working, and it is predictable. Every time a screwed or bolted hinge takes the swinging load, it works its fasteners a little. On a steel gate the holes elongate, the bolts loosen, and eventually there is nothing left to snug. You tighten it, it holds for a month, it sags again.

The durable answer on a metal gate is a weld-on hinge. Instead of relying on a few fasteners, the hinge is welded directly to the gate frame and to the post, so the load runs through a continuous weld and the hinge pin rather than through hardware in a wallowed-out hole. Weld-on barrel or tube hinges also let a welder set the exact hinge position and pin height needed to bring the free corner back up, which a fixed-hole bolt-on hinge cannot do. For a heavy or frequently used gate, this is usually not optional, it is the difference between a repair that lasts and one that is back to dragging by spring.

The frost-heave post reset (why the gate keeps dropping)

If your diagnosis landed on a leaning hinge post, understand that no amount of hinge work fixes it, because the metal is not what failed. The ground moved.

The correct reset is footing work, not gate work. A welder or contractor excavates the heaved footing, re-sets the post plumb and below the local frost line (roughly 42 inches in northern Illinois), and backfills with draining gravel so water cannot pool, saturate, and freeze against the footing again. A footing that reaches below the frost line and sheds water is what keeps the post vertical through the next winter. Once the post is plumb and cured, the gate gets re-hung and re-aligned, and the latch lines up again. Skip the footing and re-weld a hinge on a heaved post, and you are just buying one season before it sags right back.

Where DIY stops

There is a clean line between what a careful homeowner can do and what needs a welder, and it is not about pride. It is about steel, welds, and the ground.

You can reasonably DIY: installing a cable-and-turnbuckle anti-sag kit on a light, sound gate hanging on a plumb post, or realigning a loose latch. Get the cable in the tension diagonal (top-hinge to bottom-latch), tighten it, done.

Stop and call a welder when any of these are true:

  • The gate is steel or iron and screws keep pulling out. Bolt-on brackets and screws do not hold on a heavy metal gate. The fix is a weld-on hinge or a welded brace, which is welding.
  • A weld is cracked. A split weld at a hinge or a frame corner cannot be fixed with a bracket or a tube of epoxy. It has to be ground out and re-welded to carry the swinging load. Hiding a cracked weld behind hardware just delays the failure.
  • The post is leaning from frost heave. That is footing work below the frost line, not a hinge adjustment. Reset the post or the gate keeps dropping.
  • It is a heavy driveway, estate, or security gate. The weight, the leverage of a wide gate, and the safety stakes at a driveway put this out of hardware-store range. It needs correctly sized weld-on hinges and, often, a re-braced frame.

Short version: a cable kit on a light gate with a good post is a fair weekend job. Steel, a cracked weld, a heaved post, or a heavy driveway gate is a welder.

Why is my metal gate sagging if the gate itself looks fine?

Because the sag almost never comes from the gate panel. A welded steel or iron gate is a rigid frame, so when the free corner drops and the latch stops catching, the failure is at the hinge side: a worn or cracked hinge, a hinge post that has leaned, or a frame that has racked out of square. Read the latch gap, plumb the post, and check the diagonals to find which one.

A cable kit is not a fix for a steel gate with a cracked weld or a leaning post. Those need welding or footing work.

Frost heave. Saturated ground around a shallow footing freezes and expands every hard winter, lifts the post, and does not fully settle back when it thaws.
